Hi Ronni, Yes, I tap in the oval box and then try to type. None of my habits have changed since I got my iPhone 4S on the first day it was available in Perth.
I don't have trouble when emailing. It only occurs when mesaging and not on every occassion. Had no problem since I got the phone on the day it was available in Perth.
