Hi Bill, You can take an Apple Airport Extreme with you, and then plug this into the wired internet port. Then the ipad will connect to the wireless network via the Airport.
Not done this myself, but it's how I plan to go travelling through Asia and Russia later this year. Might not work for me, but it should do for you in Melbourne.
