Prepare for iOS 8 the Correct Way:

What To Do Before Upgrading an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to iOS 8

You need to prepare for this major iOS update on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod
touch. Check on compatibility and do some simple cleanup and backups with your
iOS devices… so please prepare for iOS 8 the correct way.

NOTE 1: Make sure your devices are running the latest version of iOS 7

NOTE 2: Make sure your Apps are up to date

1: Check Device Compatibility

The list of supported hardware , so make sure your device is even on the list
before anything else.

iOS 8 is compatible with the following devices:

        • iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6
Plus

        • iPod touch 5th generation

        • iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with
Retina Display

2: Clean Up Your App Collection
It is always a good idea to do some App cleanup between major iOS updates.
There isn’t much to this, just check around your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
and look for Apps you don’t use often, or don’t need, then delete them.

There is no harm in deleting apps because you can always download them again
later without having to pay for them again, they are all stored in the
“Purchased” section of your Apple ID account history and accessible through the
App Store.

3: Copy Your Photos & Movies to a Computer
Many people use their iPhones (or even iPads) as their primary camera these
days, which means they are full of memories and moments that you don’t want to
lose. But iCloud’s Photo Stream is still misunderstood by many people and won’t
keep all your pictures anyway, so the best thing to do is to periodically copy
them all over from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer.

Also you could back them up to a service like DropBox or another third party
cloud storage provider.

4: Back Up to Both iTunes & iCloud
The dual backup approach is pretty much foolproof, leaving you with both local
iTunes based and iCloud based options if you need to restore the device for
whatever reason.

Backing up is easy as always and the same across any iPhone, iPad, or iPod
touch.

With iTunes: Connect the device to the computer, select it in iTunes, and
choose “Back Up Now”
With iCloud: Open Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now

Always back up your devices before installing any system update. This is
particularly important for major iOS updates like iOS 8.

Before commencing Step 5 I suggest you TURN OFF TIME MACHINE

5: Connect your Device to iTunes - Update & Install iOS 8
If you are ready - go ahead with the iOS 8 installation & upgrade.

Keep a close eye on the upgrade process so you know what is happening and
follow any instructions if given. Don’t interrupt the installation and
verification of updated iOS software.

Wait until the process completes and your Device restarts.

Check your device has updated: Settings > General > About - Version 8.0.2
(12A405)

* Installation and upgrading can also be done OTA (over-the-air). I recommend
installing iOS Upgrades via connecting to your Mac / iTunes.

6. Don’t forget to turn TIME MACHINE back ON
