Apple previously stated that Aperture and iPhoto will remain functional if they were already installed before you update to 10.10.3 (Photos) But both the installed iPhoto & Aperture had to be the latest updated versions. iPhoto v 9.6.1 & Aperture 3.6 (Apple released the last iPhoto update v 9.6.1 only a few days before the OS X 10.10.3 release). Apple then pulled iPhoto & Aperture from the App Store the day after the 10.10.3 update was available. With their disappearance from the Mac App Store, however, users are unlikely to get future updates, and it may not be as easy to install either title on a new Mac. Your old library won't be converted, just imported, so you can still open it in Aperture or iPhoto if you like (though once you import, if you do anything new with that library in Aperture, it won't carry over to the Photos version). The new Photos library references the same master images as your old library, so you don't need the space to store images twice. It also makes for an incredibly efficient migration process. Please NOTE: My "always" warning to WAMUG Members... make absolutely sure you have secure Backups of your system and backups of ALL your Photos! Either on external drives, discs & anywhere else you store your thousands of photos!
