Hi Severin If you don't want it to auto load, then you can do the following. Plug in the device. Then go to Applications folder and open Image Capture. Click on the device under Devices, then down the bottom left you should see "Connecting this <device> opens: and iPhoto or Photos will be showing. Click on this drop down menu and choose "No Application" This will then stop it from opening. You sometimes have to do it for each device. (e.g. iPhone, iPad, Camera etc).
Image Capture is actually quite useful for a lot of things (and sometimes overlooked). Hope that helps.
