Hi David,
No doubt Ronni or Daniel will have more detail on this but, AFAIK:
1. In general, Macs won't boot from an operating system older than the one
they came with - so a new one will not be able to boot into SL.
2. You will be able to use moigration assistant to migrate your stuff over
from a SL computer OR disk, so:
* If you get your old iMac running again you can migrate from that.
* If you can¹t get the old one running but the external drive is a
bootable clone (ie up to date with all your info) you can just migrate from
that.
* If you can¹t get the old machine running and it has info you need (eg
it is more up to date than your external drive) you can remove its HD and
pop it into an external case, or use a suitable connection cable, and
migrate over from your (currently) internal HD.
HTH
Cheers
Neil
