Thanks for the suggest Peter. 

I purchased iStat Menu tonight and agree it shows lots of interesting info.

A cheap external enclosure arrived tonight also and I'm pleased to say the Mac 
Mini is starting up from the external SSD and feels snappy and faster than from 
the internal drive.

Not sure what the problem was with the internal caddy replacing the DVD drive, 
but it's working to my satisfaction now.
