Unfortunately, Microsoft Office is so pervasive that it is going to be
necessary to have around for a long time to come, simply because it has become
a sort of “default” file format.

Personally, while I have Office installed on my computers though sheer
necessity, I rarely use its software for file creation, much preferring the
logic and ease of use of Pages, Numbers and Keynote. I don’t think that High
Sierra will bring many improvements to P, N or K, but I am pinning my hopes on
iOS 11 and its introduction of file management. Apple are far more interested
these days in ensuring parity between MacOS and iOS, so that iOS becomes the
limiting factor and the MacOS version suffers. My hope is that this new change
in iOS will bring back some of the features we lost with the introduction of
the “modern” versions of P, N and K, and which have never returned.

I’m not holding my breath...
