Hi Matt, When did these external HD stop showing on the Desktop? Do either of these external HD show in Disk Utility on the 27 inch iMac? Have you checked the FW800 port in System Profiler? When connected to the FW800 port do they show in System Profiler: under Hardware - FW800 - status: ?
