Hello Graham,

In Finder Preferences > Sidebar - ‘show these items in the sidebar’.
Do you have Desktop selected as well as ‘Devices’?

You must always eject a USB device correctly either by clicking the eject 
‘icon’ ⏏️ beside the Item under Devices - or by selecting (highlight) the USB 
icon on the Desktop and go to File > Eject  ( or Command-E keys) to eject the 
USB from the Desktop.
