I just rebuilt my late 2009 27" iMac with 3TB HD 250GB SSD and upped the RAM to 
24GB - hoping to get a few more years out of it ;o)

I didn't find the process too daunting though, of course, you do have to take 
care with leads and connectors etc.

I do believe it gets progressively harder the newer the iMac - mine had the 
glass held on by magnets not adhesive tape, for example.

I find the OWC installation videos excellent - pick your specific model of iMac 
and watch the video - that should give you a good idea if it is the sort of 
thing you will personally be comfortable with.
