Hi Pat.

Right click on desktop to show menu.
Hover mouse over [Sort By]
I reckon you will find that [Snap to Grid] is ticked.
Try clicking on that to untick it.

Now you should be able to move Icons to where ever you wish.
However it may take some effort to get them in line if they don’t Snap to Grid.
Because they will not line up automatically.
