Hi Jewels.

I now use Mac OS Catalina, but I don’t think this has changed.
So I just took a look at mine.

Mail/Preferences/Accounts
Then click on "Mailbox Behaviours"
Then in the box “Erase Deleted Messages” select “Never”

I have mine selected for “After One Month"
