MacBook Air 13” mid 2012, model A1466, EMC 2559. Intel core i7 2 GHz, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM. macOS 10.15.2 Catalina.
Graphics display breaks up then crashes. May work ok for 1 minute - or 4 hours. Usually crashes after 5-10 minutes. Apple Genius Bar technician tested the MBA with external display (it still crashed), ran full hardware test (ok), erased drive and installed new OS (Catalina 10.15.1). Previous tests were with OS Mojave. All looked ok for a while - then it crashed! Suggested most likely faulty component is the Logic Board. Replacement by Apple, including labour, quoted at almost $700. Tech suggested I could get it privately repaired for substantially less, but was not specific as to actual repairer or how to acquire parts. This weekend I did a full SSD erase and Catalina re-install (to vers 10.15.2). Checked operation with an external display as a media server in both clamshell and mirror mode for photos and movies. Checked as a client in “Share Screen” mode. Crashed eventually in all test conditions. I have no real use for the MBA, even if repaired. I would rather give it away “as is” to someone that may have a genuine use for it. Perhaps a WAMUG member would like the challenge of restoring an antique? Reply on-list if you have comments of general interest. Contact me off-list if interested in the MBA. I live in Booragoon near Garden City.
