There are a few ways to achieve this, with Word’s method probably being the worst. In fact, on my copy, any attempt to access Word’s method causes it to crash. By far the easiest is simply to use you Mac’s own built-in facilities. First of all, have a look in System Preferences > Keyboard > Test. You’ll see that simply typing “1/2” will automatically replace it with ½. This is meant to work anywhere (not just Word) but can be inconsistent, so In Word, go to Edit > Emoji & Symbols. This brings up the MacOS Character Viewer. In the Search filed at the top of the window, type “half” (without the quotes, of course). You’ll see the ½ character on the second or third line. Simply double click it to insert it into your document. Method 2 always works.
