hello WAMUG

MacPro 3,1
El Capitan 10.11.6
32 GB ram
ATI Radeon 5770
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT
2 x 23" apple Displays
1x SDD 1TB WD blue Elcapitan,
1 SDD 256MB WD green Elcapitan (Western Digital)
1x HDD 1 TB WD Elcapitan ,
1x HDD 320MB (seagage) mavericks

This setup has been very stable now for the past 3 years. I usually leave the
thing on over night - after I put it to sleep

Problem

The other day when I woke it up, it immediately shutdown and went into
restart, which got as far as the about halfway , paused (30-60 sec) then
restarted - such that it started cycling a restart without ever completing the
start up process.

I tried resetting PRAM , option start , shift start, etc even safe start -
none made any perceptible difference

pulled the whole thing apart, and gave it all a good clean/vaccuum - lots of
dust on fans, , RAM boards, GPU’s

put all back in and restarted - noticed on this restart there was a funny
noise from graphic card area - only got half way in boot process.

so I turned off , removed Nvidia graphic card and started in safe mode ( with
only ATi connected) - alas booted fully up

did some tests in “TEST” account - seems okay restarted in normal mode - all
seems okay again.

turned off, reinstalled Nvidia Graphics card - - went back in cycling reboot
turned off, disconnected ATI card , left Nvidia car connected - went back to
recycling reboot.

Hmm Nvidia Graphics card might be failing.

so disconnected and removed the nvidia and have been using the one ATI radeon
graphics card only which is now powering the 1screen via Dvi - it seems
stable

I tried running both screens - , 1 x display port with Dvi adaptor and one via
direct Dvi connection,
but- the mouse (wireless mighty mouse) and wired mouse behaved very eratically
and slow. wheel scrolling is haphazard if I try anything fast - If I move
slowly response is immediated - if I move fast - responce is laggy. I’m
wondering if the ATI card cant actually run 2 screens

Questions

1. is there anyway of testing if a graphics card is failing ?

2. is the slow mouse response due to graphics card running 2 screens

3. where can I get a second graphics card for MacPro 3,1 El Capitan .

4. As my screens are Dvi am I better connecting by DVi or via display port
with display port adaptor

Any advice much appreciated
