I am assuming that you have a reasonable amount of free disk space; if not try fixing that first. The web reports similar problems over the last few years but none say that the messages are empty. Maybe have a look at the raw source (View / Message / Raw Source in my Mail program) of the returned messages to see if that offers any clues.
