Very strange. Under normal circumstances, your photos are stored in a specialised folder in the Pictures folder in your Home Folder, but all bets can be off if you are storing photos outside of this location. Are you able to open the Photos app at all? If so, the first thing to do is to check the location of your current working library by going to Preferences > General. Without any more information it’s very difficut to advise on a course of action at this stage, but a starting point might be found at https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204967 Let us know if this helps.
