Islamists call for ban on Elton John
May 9, 2010
Morocco's main Islamist opposition party has called for gay singer Elton John
to be banned from a festival later this month.
''We categorically reject the appearance of this singer because there is a risk
of encouraging homosexuality in Morocco,'' said the head of the Justice and
Development Party (PJD), Mustapha Ramid.
The PJD has asked parliament to ban John from the Mawazine music festival in
the Moroccan capital on May 21-29. Others booked to appear include Julio
Iglesias, B.B. King and Carlos Santana.
Protests greeted John's performance last month at an open-air concert at the
ancient Mayan pyramids of Chichen Itza in south-east Mexico.
