UNISYS INTEGRATES PHONE.COM TECHNOLOGY TO DELIVER MOBILE INTERNET
SOLUTIONS TO CARRIERS
Unisys to sell end-to-end WAP-ready solutions to wireless operators
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (March 13, 2000) ¾ Phone.com, Inc. (Nasdaq:PHCM),
leading provider of WAP mobile Internet software, applications and
services, and Unisys Corporation today announced that Unisys will use
Phone.com's UP.Link(TM) Server Suite as part of its global wireless
solutions portfolio. The alliance means Unisys will be able to market
full WAP compliant wireless solutions to the world's wireless
operators, enabling delivery of Internet communications and advanced
telephony services on digital mobile phones, pagers, personal digital
assistants and other wireless devices.
Through mobile Internet services, wireless operators will be able to
offer subscribers access to Internet and corporate intranet-based
services including e-mail and voice mail, and to information such as
news, stocks, weather, travel and sports through their WAP-enabled
mobile devices. Consumer and business users will therefore have
virtually anytime, anywhere access to up-to-the-minute information.
Unisys is an experienced provider of carrier-based solutions and the
pairing with Phone.com's WAP technology will ensure the company
maintains a strong position in the telecom services market. Unisys can
now offer field-tested, turnkey carrier solutions, from the network
services platform to the GSM terminal, enabling operators to provide a
range of online interactive services via Internet-enabled GSM.
"This alliance demonstrates Unisys' commitment to market leadership in
providing carrier solutions with the latest and best technology" said
Malcolm Bird, Managing Director, Phone.com Europe. "Unisys is now well
placed to help operators meet the demands and opportunities of the new
Internet economy, and Phone.com will continue to develop leading WAP
technology for our customers and partners."
Unisys is developing a new set of WAP-based user interfaces to enhance
its Unisys e-@ction Value Added Services portfolio, which already
includes voicemail and universal messaging solutions. The new visual
interface for mobile devices will enable significantly enhanced
provisioning, management and control of services for the end-user via
a consistent and easy-to-use menu. It will also provide network
operators with a powerful tool to deliver simple, secure access to
timely and relevant Internet and intranet information services.
"Combining Unisys value added services with the UP.Link Server Suite
provides state-of-the-art telco-grade technology, offering customers
an end-to-end wireless solution," said Darrell Jennings, who heads
Unisys Worldwide Communications. "Phone.com has a clearly defined
strategy for the future product enhancements and underlying wireless
technologies that is in line with Unisys plans as well as evolving WAP
standards."
Wireless service providers worldwide are investing heavily in WAP
infrastructure to take advantage of the new technology's capabilities.
Operators expect wireless Internet Services to reduce costs and
increase revenues. Innovative services can be deployed to
differentiate offerings and establish brand loyalty. Such services
include self-service on-screen Customer Care for reduced call center
load and Call Feature Control for increased use of intelligent network
features.
