Merged revisions r5794:5795 into the 2.1 branch via svnmerge from trunk
This should allow building on FreeBSD and Debian GNU/kFreeBSD (I confirmed the
latter).
NOTE: The problem worked around by r5795 is also reported as FreeBSDBug:126076
