By the time I did this (few weeks ago) I saw a bunch of 32 and 16 and 4 and and and in the code and tried to interprete it into something sensible. The result of this was (apart from some other stuff) the depth field in the bitmap. Intention was (if I recall correctly) to remove the hardcoded PAGE_DEPTH and instead get the real bitdepth from libpng, so the texture can be supplied in whatever format is wanted... I didn't finish that, as you see. In the other files that belong to that change where a bunch of total conversions, so I didn't commit that, as I currently don't have the time.
