I like lua, and maybe using it instead our custom language may be a
good idea in the long run, but I think changing it now would be a
really bad idea. We have plenty of stuff that needs doing that could
make the codebase quite unstable (new savegame format and new
netcode), and the last thing we need is to throw another firecracker
into this explosive mix. A scripting language change should only
proceed from a known stable and well tested point in the repository.
We do not now have such a point.

Also, the current scripting language *did* compile to bytecode and
store that on disk for faster load... on the PSX. I ripped that out a
while ago, since it was unused on the PC, and there is no peformance
issue to fix here. Please try to fix only *real* problems, not merely
perceived ones.
