What's the performance penalty?

I tried turning on Guard Malloc once, it made the game unplayable (the
game was effectively always paused).

I was originally fine with this, but then I made this poll:

So all of our OS X 10.4 users can play trunk just fine... why drop
support for them?

We only need Windows users to run -fstack protector to get like 80% of
its benefits, anyway. Maybe on Mac we can enable it for debug builds,
just not release builds?
