Why not giving the full hash? When preparing the news you can always use a
shorter version as the link text but still link to the full-length hash/url. sed
is your friend :P

Where is the problem? It is a bit longer than revisions but we would have
reached the same length after our one hundred undecillionth revision anyway
(don't forget the prefixed r!).
