#4024: Crash when loading campaign

I had the previous beta release of 3.1 working well. Now it starts
loading the first campaign and tosses up an error dialog.
I have a Radeon HD4850, overdue for replacement I know, but to my
knowledge AMD have halted any further releases of drivers for this
hardware, so if the solution is "get new drivers" then that is not an
option for me; their new drivers fail badly on this hardware.
