Flash is just flat out not very automation friendly. (and it has lately been a bit of a vulnerability vector, with a lot attacks based on exploiting overflows and other vunerabilities)
One reason a LOT of people (other than adobe of course) are hoping the new video stuff in HTML 5 can allow better ways of doing this kind of thing than using flash. Best solution I have found is Sikuli, or a similar image based (eggplant??) tool that just 'looks' for the right thing. but I've only used it in a few limited places, so am not sure how good of a general solution it might be.
