I appreciate the help. I'll give it a try but the performance as given on that page is not very encouraging. I am aware that javascript support can slow down a headless browser, but I'm mostly looking at static pages here, so maybe it will work for my purpose. If not, it's probably back to Mechanize, which is much better than it used to be, but still "yuck" when it comes to syntax, as far as I am concerned. I would rather not have to resort to it. [Added later: I tested it on loading a couple of websites repeatedly, and it took less than half the time :ff did, so that's not so bad.)
