Thanks for the suggestions.. Unfortunately, the set? and checked? do no 
work.
the checkbox (<input type="checkbox"> does not have any other ids or names 
on it.. the checkbox is placed as a child to a label control which has all 
the attributes, where one is the <label class="custom-checkbox"> -- now, 
this one changes to <label class ="custom-checkbox checked"> when the 
checkbox is checked.
