The wave-protocol does work on Debian. That's the distro that I use. In order to get all the packages to load, you'll need to modify your / etc/apt/sources.list You'll need something like this deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny sid main contrib non-free Note that you may not need sid. I was testing something that required a package in sid.
After you've modified your sources.list you should go through the directions carefully here: http://code.google.com/p/wave-protocol/wiki/Installation When you get to the part that requires pulling the source you'll need hg. You may or may not have this depending on if you've used hg before. You can get the package hg-buildpackage that will do this (apt- get install hg-buildpackage). Finally make sure to add the necessary records to your DNS record.
