I am of the unofficial opinion:

- Yes, cacert signed certificates should work (I can't confirm this personally).

- Upstart may be better because at least some versions of Java don't come with
cacert certificates built in, and presumably you may want to federate with
these people. I get the impression that the upstart root certificate is
more widely distributed then the cacart root certificate.
