The starter project page and bug list are still fairly accurate. What you can start on depends a bit on what you're interested in. Are you more interested in web client development or server side?
There are tutorials for a couple of the more complex areas of code, the web client being one of them. http://www.waveprotocol.org/code/tutorials There's no tutorials as such for server development, just the general http://www.waveprotocol.org/code/submitting-code development instructions.
