That client is broken: https://github.com/hdante/hello_wayland/pull/1
Weston contains a number of sample clients you can use instead:
weston-simple-shm to display software-rendered content, weston-simple-egl to
display GLES-rendered content, weston-info to display server information,
weston-terminal as a terminal, etc etc. Those are much better written, and do
work on other compositors as well.
