The four-fingered gesture to switch workspaces in Gnome 3.20 is only recognized
when the four figures are aligned parallel with the spacebar.
A rotation of the four fingers by 45 degrees (such as when they are in the
typing position) does not register a gesture, even though all of the fingers
are moving in an upward direction. I drew a pathetic ASCII diagram of the
situation.
