some programs require a different user to run, e.g. gparted wants to run as
root. to allow,
xhost +local:
should work. it says "unable to open DISPLAY :1". i am not sure if this is
related to bug99489, i recall this working, but am not sure any more.
this is on arch linux, versions:

gnome-shell 3.22.2+18+gdf7727a-1
