For the time being, Wayland compositor and clients that we have at freedesktop.org are meant for demo only, and no distribution should pack them. We should keep them as simple as possible and lean enough to evaluate the protocol.

Therefore, the idea of the patch is to make the implementation simpler and not to increase the complexity, introducing things like a backend for image conversion.
