Hi Nice overview. I would add that genivi (linux for automotive use) is going to require wayland in the upcoming standards. There is work going on to integrate the Genivi layermanager as a protocol extension into wayland.
The layermanager is a system to manage multiple hardware buffers/planes that are provided by the display controller. Hardware layers provide blitting/blending for free. It is a quite common embedded feature, since it is quite simple to implement on hardware level.
