Nice overview. I would add that genivi (linux for automotive use) is
going to require wayland in the upcoming standards. There is work
going on to integrate the Genivi layermanager as a protocol extension
into wayland.

The layermanager is a system to manage multiple hardware
buffers/planes that are provided by the display controller. Hardware
layers provide blitting/blending for free. It is a quite common
embedded feature, since it is quite simple to implement on hardware
level.

This comerical adoption is great, so now closed source drivers for
embedded gpus have to adopt the EGL extensions to get wayland running
with hardware acceleration.
