I tried this and found out that the distributed version of cairo with Ubuntu 12.04 (cairo 1.10.2?) has a bug that causes the Xserver windows to have the gradient errors I was complaining about. If I use the git version of cairo the xserver windows look fine.

So it seems best to leave the instructions in there so that the newer cairo without this bug is used.
