I am a native of small-town North Carolina and, thus, have always identified greatly with the people and pace of Mayberry. One of my favorite episodes was the businessman in a hurry having car trouble and getting stuck in Mayberry (I don't know the episode title). He finally mellows out after a good meal provided by Aunt Bee and sitting a spell with the boys on the front porch. I know it's idealized, but I have spent many lazy afternoons myself in just the same manner. I'm a big fan of Southern literature as well and have been lucky enough to have found a job with Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill. Many of our titles are Southern and small-town themed: Out on the Porch book and calendar, Wooden Churches book and calendar, The Southern Dog book--all collections of photos and literary quotes about the particular topic. We also publish novels and short stories by Clyde Edgerton, Jill McCorkle, Dori Sanders, and Kaye Gibbons. But my favorites are Lewis Nordan and Larry Brown. Nordan's Wolf Whistle is a classic in my opinion, and his novels are full of comically loveable losers who could give Barney Fife a run for his money--but are tempered with themes of great sadness, loss, violence, and love. Brown presents a more brutal view of Southern small-town life, so be prepared if you try him out. I am happy to join a group of folks who love good writing and great characters, and the Andy Griffith Show has the best of both.
