Good article from Alan and J.P. about Clay City. Obviously the person
that wrote the letter to the editor never watched the show much. The
part claiming "babbling, bumbling, buffoon, and
simple-minded characters that were usually unfriendly to outsiders" only
proves their ignorance. After all, no one hardly ever visited and then
left without a sack of sandwiches from aunt Bee.

Would be nice if someone in that town had the internet, and we could
write them there, or maybe get them to join our happy group. The net's
an "Electronal Marvel" and if you use BIGGER wires it's quicker==LOL
Isn't it amazing that way back in the "Great Filling Station Robbery"
episode when Barney was stringing the intercom system in the jail, he
knew long before we did about the importance of "bandwidth"

Have a good day and "Act Like Somebody"

Well, I've set back to see if we could glaze over this without me saying
anything and I guess not.

Folks, why is it that when we're writing an email that we don't seem to think
about the impact the words we "say" will have on others? We sometimes feel
like we can say anything we want when it's written down but if we were
standing face to face with the person, we'd never say things in the same way.

I'm trying to let this board run itself without me having to approve EVERY
email before you see it. The longer I let it run this way the more things are
said that break our only 2 Rules. Why is that?

Is it really that hard to only say things that are nice about folks or about
the characters on the show? I don't really care if you don't like Helen but I
also don't need to hear about it. Is there not something you DO like about
TAGS? Focus on that!! Tell me about THAT!!!

The entire world if filled with folks telling us what they don't like about
this or that. It's all we ever hear. This little corner of Mayberry that we
have created should be different. We shouldn't hammer one of our fellow
towns people because they're adding some fun to the discussion by talking
about real life things (so long as they are related to Mayberry in some way).
We shouldn't talk about our friends from Mayberry because we don't like
them, period.

What if somebody on this message board really likes Helen Crump and that's
thier favorite character? How does all the "Helen bashing" you folks have
been doing make that person feel? Pretty bad I'd say.

Now, in Andy's words why don't we ALL go out there and, "Act like somebody."

I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately that it's time
to restate "The Rules" for everybody. You old-timers might want to read
through this just to refresh your memories and I think it's good for all of
us to try and remember these tried and true rules.---- Allan

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey Everybody,

Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:

We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than
that, they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit
them every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting
locked in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on our faces.

Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.

I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible. I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget
about the outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt
Bee, and the rest of our Mayberry family.

To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?

I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.

Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.

Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.

I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an
example. Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look
how stupid he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that
(and meant it) what are the first things that happen to you?

First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset
about this guy talking about your neighbor.

I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular character doesn't mean that character isn't someone elses
favorite. You see, if I talk about your favorite character saying negative
things about 'em it takes your fun away.

I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you all to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.

We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.

Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.

Your Friend and neighbor,

Allan Newsome

I do suppose that of my favorite lines (among my other 837 favorites) is
the one Andy delivers at Wally's about the gold truck and "you, me and
Laura Lee Hobbs are gonna be here to meet it." Was Laura Lee somebody the
writers knew or just a made up name because it is a great name. Can't you
just hear her momma hollerin' at her as a kid? "Laura Lee Hobbs, you stop
that this minute and git in this house!" "Laura Lee Hobbs, you eat those
peas, there are starving children in China!" "Laura Lee Hobbs, you go back
and close that screen door......and don't you slam it!" "Laura Lee Hobbs,
quit hitting your little brother!" "Laura Lee Hobbs, I've told you a
thousand times not to park that gold truck in the yard!"

Long live Laura Lee.

Hidee!

Ellen asked us to comment on the changing relationship between Andy and Aunt
Bee as the series progressed, from an almost mother/son relationship to a
father/child relationship.

As Ellen said, it's been discussed here before how Andy's character changed,
especially after Don Knotts left. When I was watching the E! True Hollywood
Story, I noticed something Andy Griffith said about the later years of the
series. He talked about how his energy level was very low, and how he was
starting to come to work not even knowing his lines. He said something
like, "I wasn't giving it my best shot there towards the end." (not an exact
quote) I thought this explained a lot about the difference in TAGS in the
later years. Since Andy Griffith was so much the guiding force and spirit
behind the show, when he started to not put as much into it, it showed up on
screen.

By the way, like many of you I was leery of E! giving TAGS the "True
Hollywood Story" treatment, but I was pleasantly surprised. And did you
notice Andy telling Don Knotts the REAL reason the sheriff don't wear a gun?
Very interesting!

"Don't you got a jack?"

I hate to be a bother but can someone post once again the website for
that article about the Mayberry of the Midwest ? In transferring stuff
to my new computer it got lost before I could check it out. And yes,
I'll write a letter to affirm what I'm sure most of us feel, that it's a
compliment of the highest caliber!!! Aunt Bee of Orlando Thanks in
advance.

1. Taverns and Bars: In Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army, Barney is trying to
keep him from throwing a rock at the new plate glass window for the
courthouse. In that scene, there is a storefront that has the word 'bar'
painted on the window. I cannot read the word above it. Can anyone make it
out? We had a discussion on the Blackboard the other day about a "hotel and
bar" next to the Post Office, but I think this is a different place in town.
2. Some of the epilogs are on the mayberry.com/tagsrwc site. Just click on
The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club from mayberry.com or the
Blackboard (and I'm sure other places). It's in the left frame under
Interactive.
3. Laura Lee Hobbs, I loved your narratives on the tea party. I could just
picture y'all like Rafe Hollister stuffed in that suit - - "You look good
enough for burying" and Jeff Pruitt with his little plate on his knee. You
have a knack for creative writing - - you shouldn't be working in the dime
store - - you should be a writer for the Mayberry Gazette. You could still
watch for gold trucks.
4. Since Tom lives in Whitefish, Montana, we should say "Go up an alley and
holler whitefish!" In Tom's defense, though, he did say "I prefer;" i.e.,
he was giving us his opinion, and while he did say "Lets stay on subject,"
Allan has said the same thing. Some see LLH's narrative as being related to
TAGS, some don't, but I wouldn't want Tom to get his feelings hurt either if
we "carp" too much on him. I asked my husband the other day if he liked
something and he said "no." I said, "yes you do!" and he said, "It wasn't a
right or wrong answer - - you can't say someone's opinion is the wrong
answer- it's their opinion." Tom was nice enough, too, to list every
avenue available to reach him. And like they say, "If you don't like the
weather around here, just wait a day or two and it will change." You know
who said that?
