You could buy beer and wine and liquor in a state run package store; no where else. You could not buy a glass of alcohol in a restaurant and there were no taverns or bars. To get a drink outside your home you had to be a card-carrying member of the Moose or Elks clubs. They would serve a member a mixed drink for a 'donation' since selling booze would be illegal. And ofcourse, moonshine was totally illegal since it wasn't taxed by the revenuers. It was even against the law to possess it, just like in Mayberry.
