I was reading through TV Land's "2000 Best Things About Television" and was
pleased to see quite a few listings related to our favorite show sprinkled
among a very impressive and funny list of characters, shows, and television
events. I think they did an outstanding job of capturing some of the history
and pop culture of America. Some of the direct TAGS mentions include:
- -Andy Griffith Show -Barney Fife
- -Andy Griffith -Gomer Pyle
- -Don Knotts -Aunt Bee
- -Ron Howard -Floyd the Barber
- -Jim Nabors -Otis the Drunk
-Opie Taylor
-Goober Pyle
- -"Man in a Hurry" Episode
- -"The Pickle Story" Episode
Plus an interesting selection that was so important, they listed it twice
under different titles:
- -The Andy Griffith Show pilot (Make Room for Daddy eps) as #211
- -Danny Meets Andy Griffith (Make Room for Daddy eps) as #560
There were other things listed that are not noted as part of TAGS, but do
have direct ties to it:
- -Bob Denver (Dud Wash) -Peyton Place ("That Peeton Place")
- -Barbara Eden (Ellen Brown) -Gomer Pyle, USMC
- -Unwanted relatives visiting on sitcom eps (Uncle Ollie & Aunt Nora)
- -Character goes on a game show eps (Aunt Bee)
- -Hamburgler, Fry Guys and Mayor McCheese (Hal Smith and Howard Morris
voices)
- -Barney Rubble (Hal Smith voice)
- -Avid editing (TV Land is quite familiar with this one)
It is worth the download at www.tvland.com if you want to see the whole list
and order that they rank them.

In the November 1996 issue of Guideposts magazine there is a section written
by Andy Griffith called Journey to Health in which he describes his illness
and the importance of Faith, state of mind and support of his wife Cindi in
helping him to deal with the continuing challenges and pain. Perhaps some of
you would be interested in trying to buy a copy if it is still available.
Their address is Guideposts 39 Seminary Hill Road, Carmel,NY 10512. Hope this
helps the members who have mentioned having this disease and their desire to
read about Andy's case. Cheerio Meredith, junior

Oops, Folks!!!
There are NO MOUSE PADS this time. They didn't sell last time so I'm not
having them made again this time around. Sorry about the mention still being
in there. I just used the write-up from 1998 and I THOUGHT I took all the
references to "mouse pads" out of there.
Y'all get your orders for the t-shirts and sweatshirts in to me as soon as
you can.

Help! I really enjoyed the Mayberry/Millionaire scenario and I accidently
deleted that digest. Will someone please forward it to me again.

Thanks. As for a fantasy date, do I have to pick just one? Where do I start?
I used to be in love with Andy and I still wouldn't say no, but if I had to
pick I guess it would be Jim Lindsey, a.k.a. Jim Best, Jack Nicholson, what
women could tell him no? Or my teenage heart throb, Ronnie Schell, who I had
the pleasure of meeting at Bob Scheib's farm a couple years back. I just
can't decide. But since I am one of Mayberry's fun girls, I guess I don't
have to choose. Bring on the cashew fudge. Lots of luck to you and yours.
Cathy, a.k.a. Skippy.
P.S. Allan. thanks for the great job you do maintaining this list. We
appreciate your dedication to preserving Mayberry.

Yes - Opie was all of the above. I also remember that on more than one
occasion he had "Pa" eating "crow" for supper. Andy had a lot of horse
trader in him but Opie taught him lessons in fair dealing. I wonder if Opie
ever figured out why Barney wanted to take Thelma Lou to the duck pond.

Watching the Carnival episode last night with Jerry Van Dyke and I just
knew that with good crowd scenes like that, I would find Johnny there
somewhere, so I looked hard. He wasn't sitting in the "koochie-hoochie"
show, he wasn't any of the barkers and I never even saw him on the midway
so I thought he had the week off. BUT in one of the street scenes with
Jerry and Andy, who should walk by in the background but Johnny on the arm
of a lady! I'm supposin' it was his wife and judging from the grip she had
on him, that probably explains when he didn't get to go to the carnival.
It's a shame, too, like Floyd says, a body can never get too much culture.

A couple things have crossed my mind watching TAGS this week:
1 - Last night TV Land showed the episode that came right after Don Knotts'
last regular show - had Jerry Van Dyke. I was wondering if this was sort of
a tryout to see if Jerry would take the place of our beloved Deputy Fife? He
didn't really add much to the show. Could this show have been a failed
experiment?
2 - I have wondered over the last few days...what does the "T" in Ernest T.
Bass stand for? We were never told this info on the show...any good guesses
out there?
Just a couple of things to mull over -
Dane Hawk
Otis: Who's going to stop me?
Barney: Me, myself, and I!
Otis: That's three people!!

Well, now, if you're talking about manners the discussion starts and
ends with Andy. The guy is a saint.
He is constantly building up Barney's morale when his work load would be so
much easier if he'd just fire him (but wouldn't that break all of our
hearts), he looks after every citizen of Mayberry as if they were all
his kin, he's a wonderfully loving father (if you don't count those
horrid colored shows which his fathering was definitely in question), ever
respectful to his Aunt Bee, and a wimp to Helen (which makes me mad, but is
good if you are Helen).
In general, the guy is a friend to all, and a terrific singer.
I can't find a whole lot wrong with him. Lydia says he was mean to her
though, and she votes for Opie. (Remember, he said she looked like a dog.)
He probably meant it in the nicest possible way, don't you think?
Beautiful gold truck watching weather, just beautiful...Laura Lee Hobbs

We have thought about it several times but so far nobody has done anything
about it. It's kind'a like the weather. Lots of people talking about it but
nobody does anything about it. If anybody has any insite into doing or not
doing a newsgroup...let me know.
The main problem I've seen is that newsgroups tend to get SPAMMED bad. I'm sure
a Mayberry newsgroup would get hit hard by folks that like to bother other
folks.

Subject: Colored Episodes
I've read where the colored episodes are coming up. Now, I only have
a vague memory of most of those shows--shoot, it's been well over 10 years
since I've seen one. But there's a few of them I honestly never
recall seeing at all. I was in college when they first aired and missed
them, and was never that faithful about watching them in reruns.
I can't remember seeing Aunt Bee flying an airplane, and frankly that seems
so out of character to me. I vaguely recall something about Helen getting
lost in the woods (as usual she was mad and Andy was after her). I don't
recall their wedding at all, just a faint memory of the honeymoon scene with
Barney. I recall next to nothing about their coming home with their newborn
baby.
But most of them I do remember, and what I remember was how ill with
Opie Andy seemed to be a lot of the time which is my biggest complaint
about the colored episodes.
And while the shows were not really funny, they were a pleasant enough
way to spend an evening at home. So, enjoy them for the rest of us who
aren't getting any Andy at all. And maybe we could get a run down
on which episode was shown since I'm sure I am not the only one not as
familiar with these particular shows.
Thanks, and happy viewing! Debbie Dubose
