Subject: WHAT ARE "NEWSGROUPS"?

|Someone in the early Thursday newsletter mentioned something about having
"newsgroups"; what are they? We are still too new to the web to know what
newsgroups
on a TAGS newsletter site would be? Also, we watched the color episode this
evening. We, ALSO, noticed some differences in the surroundings. The kitchen
door was in a different position. In this color episode it was on the same wall
as the hutch; it used to be at a right angle to that hutch. Also, it seemed
that things just "felt" different; even the walls and wall paper "looked"
different.
There was a different "feel" to everything.
|Someone has suggested that maybe the people's attitude came across as not as
funny and happy BECAUSE Barney was not there. There really IS a difference
in the attitude of the actors. Glad someone answered the question about Jerry
Van Dyke's appearance on TAGS. Thanks and keep up the good work, Mr. Newsome.

Subject: TAGS blooper

I recently saw a blooper in the episode "Opie Flunks Arithmetic" that I
had never seen before. In the scene where Andy comes in Opie's room to
help him with his long division, the scene switches back and forth first
from Opie's left and then back to Andy's right. In the view from Opie's
left Andy's next to top button of his shirt is unbuttoned, yet in the
view
from Andy's right it is buttoned. The entire scene is seamless with the
dialogue, but I had never noticed his unbuttoned/buttoned shirt button
before. Has anyone else ever noticed that before?

Let me lead, Big Maude. Dance backwards and re-visit
Barney's steps along the railroad tracks. He found
money once, and Jed Clampett, too.

Subject: Barney

Well, not really "Barney" but Don Knotts on the old Steve Allen show. In
years past, as I rode the city delivering mail, I kept a radio/tape recorder
in my vehicle and when a special thing came on the radio, I hit the record
button. In 1991 I happened to tape this short nostalgia segment of Steve
Allen interviewing Don Knotts, as one of "the Man on The Street" episodes.
Anyone familiar with those knew Don played a highly nervous, shaky person,
which sets the scene of Steve asking him about milking a cow, to which Don
replies "I never could milk a cow - all I got was buttermilk!"
And, if you put his shakyness to milking a cow you get the scene!
His more famous interviews were when he had a poem to read, and he shook so
bad the paper sounded like, well, hold up a sheet of paper with both hands
and act like you are highly nervous to get the effect! Then he would say, "I
think I can remember most of it."
What a great comedian he always has been!

Subject: RE: Color Episodes

While I agree that the show lost something when it went color, I don't think
it can all be blamed on that factor alone. Also remember that the show had
lost a pivitol character in Barney Fife. You can always judge the quality
of a character by the number of people needed to fill the various aspects of
his/her part.

With Barney, they needed Warren to be the good-intentioned and overzealous
deputy; Goober to be the gullible rube who had to be saved from himself; and
Howard Sprague to be the sheltered bachelor who thought he was a real
swinger. These are just a few of the aspects of Barney's character that
they had to try to replace, and still they didn't quite get it done...

There were some really good color episodes that still caught the flavor of
the black and whites (which usually had the theme of Andy saving the day
because he kept a cool head and being proven right in the end). Among them
were the Gypsies episode and (I think this one was in color) the distant
cousin of Wyatt Earp who visited town and challenged Andy to a fight.

"Through the forest, wild and free, comes the gypsy melody..."

Hey Jacob and All,
I have an idea that might help my neighbor out on this one. You may actually
be able to buy this video direct from the Discovery Channel. I went to Yahoo
and keyed in The Learning Channel. The search took me to the Discovery.com
site. There are hundred of their shows on tape for sale in the
DiscoveryStore. I tried to be neighborly and find the show on Andy you were
looking for but it appears one may need the title of what you were watching.
If you can't find the video maybe you can find a schedule of shows being
aired on the site.

Back to watching Aunt Bee's pickle stock,

Hey To Jacob and All Again,
Curiosity got the better of me so I called the customer service number on the
DiscoveryStore.com site. They connected me with viewer relations of TLC.
Apparently this only air once when you walked in on it, Jacob. The nice
representative told me that the video is not for purchase and as of this
time, they do not have a re-air date. She said to kindly call them back at
the end of June and there may be another air date showing then.
The number I used was 1-800-889-9950, in case you want to keep checking on
this show.

Lands sakes, I gotta get back to watching those pickles!

Hey:

Jim Lindsey's real name is James Best and he did appear in another somewhat
successful show you may have heard of, "The Dukes of Hazzard" as the bumbling
sherriff, Roscoe P. Coltrain.

OK, here we go since somebody brought it up. What's your favorite color
episode? One rule - you can't count the ones with Barney - 'tain't fair.
My vote is "Dinner at Eight."

Hi Mayberry Fans,

Just wanted to let everyone know I have placed an item up for auction on
EBay. It is an Andy Griffith Show Sheriff's uniform (shirt, pants, badge ).
Just thought I'd give everyone a shot at it. It's good for those Mayberry
Sheriff look alike contests and Mayberry patrols. Or other Mayberry events.
You can see it at :

My two cents worth on the Color episodes. There are more good ones out
that than most folks think, who haven't seen them for a while. If you put
aside the fact that Barney is not there...and accept Howard Sprague and
Emmett Clarks as regulars I think there are some very enjoyable/funny shows.
I think Goober came more into his own in the color era. He is a stitch in
170 A Man's Best Friend. Some very good shows featuring Howard are "Howard
the Bowler" "Big Fish in a Small Town" "The Lodge" and others. I think
the writers struggled with Opie as an adolescent in Mayberry...though they
did capture some real issues such as girl-friends, peer pressure, jobs and
rock music.....they were good family shows...just not as much comedy. One
thing that didn't change was the pure small-town nature of Mayberry.
Episodes 174, The Church Organ, 188 the Battle of Mayberry, and 189 A
Singer in Town (Keevy) all continued to resonate that community spirit. The
most under-rated character of the color episodes was Warren Ferguson. He
had some very funny shows...but how could he ever fill the shoes of the
classic Don Knotts? Among the best color shows are of course the 4 or so
shows that Barney returns. I think #240 the Summit was the best show of
last dozen or so. Barbara asked a few days ago about Emmett.
Among his highlights are the show where he tried to become and Insurance
salesman to please his Brother in Law...(236) When he ran against Sam Jones
for Council..and when he tried to buy his wife a mink coat. Like Floyd, he
was rarely the key character is a show, but always good for a grin thru a
stop by Fix-it shop. Check 'em out on the TVL run, I think you'll find
some new favorites...although there are a few duds. (which I won't mention
due to Rule #2).

Harriet, the Poultry Pilferer, Thanks for the kind words about the
Millionaire/Ernest T bit...and sorry part 2 took so long to get out.
In case you're recommending me to any Hollywood agents, it's
Gritton...although Griffon sounds even closer to the great name of Griffith.

Fantasy Dates...I agree with the lady who said manicurist Ellen Brown, after
all since its a dream..why not Dream of Jeanie?
Also on the short list Ellie Walker, Mary (Sue Ann Langdon) Simpson, true
fun girl Thelma Lou...and how 'bout a real 'mystery date'
Laura Lee Hobbs..she don't get outa the dime store much so she's probably a
cheap date...especially if you throw in a door prize.

there's another Millionaire round to come, but it will probably be next
week...I haven't got the work order yet, and I've been busy with a little
sweepin' filin' and takin' out the trash.
