Otis says something funny and they cut to Andy for a close-up laugh then back to behind Otis to see all 3 characters again. When they cut back to the long shot, they cut too soon and we get to see Andy deliver the same laugh twice. dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 08:05:40 -0400 From: "Cathy Schreima" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V2 #229 To Aunt Bee-e, a.k.a. I'm with you Crystal. I am second to none in my admiration for Andy because of his humility. It's just a shame he never got an Emmy even if just for being able to keep a straight face in dealing with Barney! I was so proud for him when he was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame. I had been wondering if Andy was still in Mayberry and acting as sheriff and just being written out of the story. Well I saw on this morning's episode that Andy was at church (Helen & Opie were at home, Op had a cold) and he later went to get the swimming pool money from the ex-convicts. So I guess it was assumed (at least in the beginning) that Andy was still in town as sheriff. By the way, I loved seeing the old crooks singing their hearts out at church! That was my favorite hymn as a child although I sang it as "Bringing in the Sheets." Did anyone catch the Oscar winning actress on this episode? Jodie Foster (Mike's real-life sister) was in the church play as a fairy. And how about Millie with her secret past as a chorus girl? Mayberry is like an onion, you keep peeling back the layers and you just keep finding more layers! ~the groovy misspoovey~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 15:48:21 GMT From: "Harriet Browder" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: St. Pete Times article Got a little plug in for TAGS! A while back The St. Petersburg Times (one of the top ten newspapers of the country) asked for people to send in their favorite web site. Mine was picked as one to publish. Here is the paragraph: Shazam! Travel back to a simpler time, with Sheriff Taylor, Barney (the deputy, not the dinosaur), Aunt Bee and the rest of the Mayberry gang at www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/index.htm. It's the site of the Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club, and it overflows with information for fans, including an episode guide, frequently asked questions and details on each character. Harriet Browder of St. Petersburg, who recommended this site, has watched the show from its first episode on Oct. 3, 1960. "All of us old die-hard Andy fans know the lines to almost every episode," she said. Have they stopped showing them on TVLand? Was there no epilogue to this episode? >>> Every episode has an epilogue, but TV Land does not always show it. In this one, Ms. Poultice tries to convince Andy, Barney, and Gomer to continue performing as a vocal trio, with herself as coach. She suggests several possible names for the trio, all based on popular groups of the day. Her ideas include "Two lads and a sheriff," "The New Mayberry Minstrels," and "Taylor, Pyle, and Fife." - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 10:40:06 -0500 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: anniversary shows >>>From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I was wondering if there was going to be a 35 years of Andy anniversery, I've already got the 25 years of Andy, and the 30 years of Andy anniversery shows.... >>> You're five years behind the times! That canary hasn't been with her since she sang Sunday afternoons at the Pot O' Honey restaurant. Also, this year is the 40th anniversary of TAGS, not the 35th. TAGS premiered on October 3, 1960. For them that don't know, the 25th anniversary was a show on TBS hosted by Don Knotts (just Don in the studio - no live audience), in which he talked about the show and introduced some of his favorite episodes. The 30th anniversary show had a live audience and was aired on TBS. It included Don Knotts, Betty Lynn, Howard Morris, Jack Dodson, Hal Smith and if memory serves, George Lindsey. The really BIG one was the 35th anniversary celebration in Winston-Salem on September 30th and October 1st, 1995, but it was not televised. This show included Don Knotts, George Lindsey, Howard Morris, all 4 Dillards, Maggie Peterson, Hoke Howell, Jean Carson, Elinor Donahue, James Best, Keith Thibodeaux, Amzie Strickland, Arlene Golonka, Jackie Joseph, Joanne Moore, James Best, Bernard Fox, and Richard O. Linke. This was the largest ever public gathering of Mayberry stars. The other day I mentioned the Mayberry rocking chair that I am trying to sell - it was used on stage at this event. It's autographed on the back by all of them except Jean Carson. It's still for sale, so if anybody is interested send me an email. There have been rumors about a possible 40th anniversary show this fall, but "I ain't talkin', I ain't talkin'. The more you're askin', the more I'm balkin'!" - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 11:01:48 -0500 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Don Knotts' military service >>>From: "Jim Hady" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I asked a while back and didn't see a reply. Might have missed the answer with us moving and all. Anyhow, I had somebody ask me if Don Knotts was ever a Drill Sargeant in real life. >>> Don Knotts did serve in the military, but he was never a drill sergeant. For more details, I recommend his autobiography "Barney Fife and Other Characters I Have Known," available from Weaver's or The Bullet. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 11:04:28 -0500 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: heater >>>From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ....I think that door used to go down into the basement where the furnace was. Then someone with the board of health decreed that there needed to be more natural lighting for the prisoners and that a coal furnace did not provide adequate heat. >>> That's a pretty good theory, but the furnace in the basement was not totally phased out. It was still being used 4 years later (possibly as a backup heat source) at the time of Newton Monroe's arrest. Barney sent him downstairs to clean it, and from the billowing black clouds that came up a moment later, I would guess that it was probably a coal furnace. Apparently the steps to the basement must be located off of the back room, along with the restroom. You're certainly correct that a gas appliance adjacent to sleeping quarters is probably not a good idea (Judge Judy recently reprimanded a defendant for a similar offense). - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 11:12:25 -0500 From: "jengun2" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Don Knotts as a regular Here is something else I have often commented on about Andy Griffith. He was the only one on that show to be on every single episode (to the best of my knowledge) up until the time it became Mayberry RFD. They did not use flashback episodes either. How rare would that type of professionalism and dedication be today? He worked awfully hard to make that show a success. - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 20:03:01 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Don Knotts as a regular In a message dated 07/09/2000 1:14:34 PM Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Sheldon Leanard got on the camera after one of the shows aired and he said at first they weren't going to put Don Knotts as a regular chacter on the show, >> Another thing that I have always found so amazing is that Andy Griffith himself insisted that Don play the funny guy. He said that he (Andy) would be better to play straight man to Don's humor. And it was all because he recognized Don's unprecedented talent. How many actors today would insist that someone else get more lines, scenes, etc. than themselves?? That seems to be one of the reasons that there just aren't any other shows out there like "TAGS". Never has been, never will be! Everyone have a wonderful day.
