Yo, Wee's just sittin round wonderin if Andy ever got to hear the gossip on
Myra Koonce as was about to be told
by deputy Barney Fife(in the episode"The shoplifter") but every-time he
would start to tell Andy about Myra
he would get interrupted.
>>>

We never did get to hear the whole story, not even in the epilogue. This
was actually a very clever bit of writing, because this way it's up to each
viewer's imagination to fill in the rest. Sort of like how each one of us
has an idea of what Sarah and Juanita might look like, but it's probably
different from what everyone else has in mind.

I don't know if I was the FIRST one to report that misinformation, but I'm
guilty. Dirty me, dirty me, I'm disgusted with myself! I had been going by
what Jim Clark had published in an earlier issue of The Bullet, and we now
know that we were both wrong.

>>>TAG fan Dick Kandalec wrote me to ask if I could help him find out who
the fabled Mr. Schwump was in real life. I am using the Digest to reply in
case other readers might be able to help...since I don't have the foggiest
who the elusive Schwump is or was. Can someone else assist distraught
Dick?....Harvey Bullock.
>>>

For them that don't know, Mr. Schwump (or Schwamp) was a character who
appeared in many episodes, but since he never had a speaking part, the actor
was never given screen credit.

To this day, no one has ever been able to figure out who the actor was
(that's right, not even me - but I ain't givin' up! I'm gonna plight from
now 'til doomsday if I gotta.) At this point, it seems the only chance of
identifying him would be to spot the same actor in some other show from the
TAGS era. However, this may be impossible, because he may not have been an
actor at all. He may have been a crew member (perhaps a technician of some
sort) who occasionally served double-duty as an extra.

Now Harvey, here's one maybe you CAN answer for us: I noticed that in
certain episodes of Gomer Pyle - USMC episodes, characters named Sgt. Persky
and Sgt. Denoff are mentioned by Carter. One such episode (written by R. S.
Allen & Harvey Bullock) was on this morning; I don't know the title, but it
was the one where Bunny collected a carload of items for charity and left
them in Carter's car, then Gomer tried to deliver them and Carter thought
his car had been stolen. Carter wondered why a car thief would choose his
car, and not Persky's or Denoff's. In other episodes, Persky and Denoff
were the names of Carter's poker buddies.

Anyway, to get back to my question, Bill Persky and Sam Denoff were writers
for The Dick Van Dyke Show (and probably lots of other shows too). My
question is, was using their names like this just a way of saying hello to
friends of yours, or was there some sort of inside joke going on here?

I know it may be strange to pick a male character, but, If I could be on
TAGS, there is no doubt I would love to be Barney in "Barney's Physical."
Anybody that can eat like that and stay so thin, has my vote!

Subject: Re: case of the missing guest room

Just a few other incidents re the mysterious guest
room that come to mind:
1. When Miss Alice Harper came to live in Mayberry,
didn't she also stay in the Taylor guest room until
her house was ready??
2. Otis did his time at the Taylor house (aka "The
Rock") in "Aunt Bee, the Warden".
3. Also, don't forget they had the "summit meeting"
there and all those men had to sleep someplace - altho
as I recall several of them stayed up in the kitchen
that night raiding the icebox -
4. Mr. Wheeler, the "handyman" ( I use the term
loosely) and Aunt Bee's old beau, Roger also stayed in
the guest room.
5. And last but not least, when Barney came to town
and escorted Tina Andrews to the movie premier, HE
stayed in the guest room.
That's all I can think of for now, but seems like the
guest room was there a good bit of the time.

Hope everyone has a Mayberry kind of day!
120+ degrees here today. Everybody talks about the
weather, but no one does anything about it!

Miss Poovey asked about the disappearing guest room at the Taylor house. I
can only speak from personal experience. My guest room disappears from time
to time and becomes a Fibber Magee closet (for the youngsters - this means
"junk"). Right now, my guest room contains Coleman coolers, lawn chairs,
garage sale stash for my September sale, I boat seat. 1case 30 wt. motor oil
(was on sale), and a very large broken lamp (could use Mr. Fixit on that).
On the bed are 3 loads of laundry that needs folding, a shoebox full of
dumped out photos in chronological order, a stack of outdated phone books
(big ones), and a stale peanut butter sandwich. If anybody visited right
now, they would be sleeping on the ironing board - I guarantee.
Linda - This Goober would do Erma Bombeck proud !!

In answer to a note by Jeff Koontz: After the Spring, 2001 issue of
"The Bullet" it will no longer be published as reported in the last
issue. Jim Clark said it will now be found on-line. Also want to thank
Harvey Bullock for responding to my personal letter to him about who Mr.
Schwump is. I figured if anyone would know it would be Harvey. Oh
well. Anyone else help us solve this mystery? Thanks. Dick.

Subject: Pigeon Forge Event Review #3

The glue that held the evening together was the antics of two modern-day
TAGS character impersonators, David Browning and Allan Newsome. Fans were
greeted in the lobby with autograph signing by the Mayberry Deputy and Floyd
the Barber. David also acted as Emcee for the event.
Browning delighted fans with his uncanny resemblance, mannerisms, and
favorite phrases of the true Barney Fife. He had a commanding presence on
stage and entertained with prepared jokes as well as impromptu gags and
interaction with the audience.
He also played off of some of the 'real' TAGS stars and singled out audience
members who resembled the likes of Otis, Rafe Hollister and Opie. People
lined up to get their picture with the modern-day Mayberry deputy and his
trademark poses.
Newsome, though an amateur, carried off the part of Floyd well with
hem-hawing, hair clipping, and head rolling and even sound-alike comments.
His magic act, with Browning's assistance set the tone of laughter for the
evening. If the real Floyd were to see him he might have said "He's a nice
fella... good looking and oh Oh He's funny!, He's really funny Oh I'll bet
he's as funny as old uh....
well I don't remember his name, but he was funny too. I don't think he can
cut hair though...He's not even holding the scissors right. It takes lots
of practice."

After intermission the curtains opened to Mayberry's favorite music group,
the Dillards (aka the Darlings). The familiar string combo sounded as good
or better that they did in their on-show performances. Country Music fans
and TAGS fans alike were foot-tapping and enjoying the picking and singing
of the famous foursome. Between numbers Mitch Jayne and Rodney Dillard
related stories of their roots with the Griffith show 37 years ago, and the
continued success since then. The versatile Rodney Dillard played a
harmonica tune with the harmonica completely inside his mouth (lets see
Barney do that with his french harp). The bigger responses from the
audience came when they sang their two original songs performed on the show
about moonshiners, Ebo Walker and Dooley.
Just when it seemed like the music and the reminiscing couldn't get any
better, the Darling boys were joined by their sister Charlene.
Maggie came out dressed as that sweeter-than-honey mountain girl. She
joined them in singing "There is a Time". She then ask the audience if they
wanted to hear "Salty Dog" which of course the fans loved as she did that
familiar hop around the stage. The only thing missing was dear old Briscoe
who they spoke of fondly. One could close their eyes and almost here the
"jugging" of their mentor and "Daddy" Denver Pyle. It was a classic
Griffith performance.

Before the evening closed, all the performers lined up on stage to take
questions from the audience. perhaps more later on that.

(I did not get the opportunity to stay for autographs but am enjoying the
stories of those who did)

following commercial with the tarot cards /psychic person doing  her "thing";

What a GREAT question...but a very difficult one. I actually spent days
thinking about this even though in the past I have often wished myself into
many of the roles on the show. But I have finally decided that I would want
to be one of the kids in "The Senior Play" episode. They seemed to be having
a super time up there on that stage...and besides, there was nothing wrong
with the way they were dancing! And the lesson they taught to that grouchy
principle was priceless!! Yea, I'd be one of those kids up there showing the
older generation how to cut a rug!!! What a blast they must have had doing
that episode! Thanks for the question...it made me "thank"! Crystal M. in AL

This reminded me of the first time my daughter watched this episode...she sat
all the way through it then announced that she didn't like it because she
never got to hear what the gossip was on Myra Koonce. And she was REALLY
mad!! I could see her jaw muscle workin'!
