I have a question. This may be one for Allan, Paul, or Harvey Bullock. When a
sort of famous person made a guest appearance on TAGS, how was the script
written. When Michael J. Pollard, or Jerry Van Dyke were on the show, was the
script already written and these people got the part? Or, when it was
announced they were coming on, was the script written to highlight their
talents? Just curious!!

Subject: Mayberry and Mobile Phones

Hi to all,
I'm no expert on this by any means. Maybe someone else who is a communication
expert or something can help us out here. But, I do know a just a little
about cell phones and especially about the principles of 2-way radio
communication, as I am a 'Ham' radio operator & have installed myself a VHF 2
way radio in my car. Modern cellphones operate at lower power levels, and
require many cellphone towers. I'm thinking that the older mobile phones were
basically radiotelephones. They probably operated at much higher power output
levels, with much fewer towers around back then. Range might have been as
much 20-50 miles or more under right conditions. (I'm making a guess at the
range-as I'm comparing it to radio communication today and assuming the same
power level of a typical 2-way radio operating at VHF range running 40 watts
or so.) I don't know how much power the old phones were running, but, it was
a lot more than today's phones. Remember this is just an example, and range
may have been totally different. But, at any rate, very few people had mobile
phones in Mayberry back then. I do recall on that Episode, the instructions.
To talk, the operator had to get in touch with an operator to place the call.
What a simple way of life back then. But, after all, in the low crime
district of Mayberry County, very few people really needed a phone? Anybody
else who can help us out?

Happy motoring,
David

I was just wondering how common that was in 1966. Also....how did car
phones back then work in small rural areas. I doubt that Mayberry had
any cell towers around. Any ideas? >>

The rare car phones that existed back then were not cell phones, they worked
more like radios. Cell phones weren't around until the early 1980s...

My guess is a cell phone wouldn't work well in Mayberry. I mean, think about
it...who'd want to hear that thing ringing at Myers' Lake?

I've been watching TAGS since it originally aired, and
I've caught most of the bloopers that I've read about
in wbmutbb. However, a few nights ago I was watching
one of my tapes and noticed something I had never seen
before. In the episode Bookie Barber, which aired on
April 16th 1962, Andy and Barney were standing outside

the courthouse noticing that the gentlemen getting
out of the car had been in the day before and then
Barney blurts out one of his signature lines, "
Haven't you ever heard of a person with a compelsion
complex." Just before this, in the background, there
is a little old lady walking down the sidewalk, or, at
least I thought. Something struck me as not quite
right so I watched the scene several times frame by
frame and still not being convinced of what I was
seeing I brought in two other TAGS fans, who happen to
be my teenage sons, we all agree that the person
walking down the sidewalk is a man, wearing a dress
and also wearing a monkey mask.
Are we just over TAGGED or is this another one of
the set pranks.

take a bath today? Why Pa, is there one missin?" Mike

Howdy beloved:
Happy holidays and wishes for health and happiness now and throughout the
upcoming year.

Just a thought or two (I been settin here thainkin and thainkin)...(a)
concerning the bird nest. It seems obvious to me, being a simple mind, that
the way Opie got the bird nest in the cage was by getting Goober's help.
After all, if a man can get a car in the court house, a little thing like a
bird nest would be a piece of cake (or Mr. cookie bar, as the case may be.)
(2) "A man moves into town..." oh, sorry, wrong thought....(b) concerning the
mobile phone in the "Foster lady" episode; once upon a time, about 14 years
ago, when cell phones were "never gonna catch on"; mobile phones operated on
a radio wave system much like marine phones. The system was very much like a
"party line" (now I am reaching back in time) and more often than not callers
were limited to a predetermined length of time per call. I myself used such
a system as late as the mid '80's when, in our area "cell phones would never
be used due to the cost of tower installation." The phone allowed up to
three minutes per call and anyone on the system could listen in to your
conversations. Sounds medieval, I know, but it actually worked pretty well.
The system was used mostly by construction folk and service type businesses.

Now I hope Santa is good to everyone, be kind one to another, be careful
crossing the street and don't "draink" too much.
Thank you, good night, we love you all
The fatman, and his cute little wifey

Subject: Barneys 1st car

I was watching the episode where barney buys his 1st car. After the car
breaks down
when returning it to mrs. Lesch, there's the scene where Andy and Barney
are asleep in
the car. My question is, why were both andy & barney in the back seat?????

>>>From: Don Good <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
A couple of recent posts have caused something to prey on my mind. How many
times does Barney say, "What's the matter with you? Haven't you ever
seen...?"
>>>

I can add one more to your list:

"What's the matter with you, haven't you ever seen a person with his head in
a harness before?" (Barney's Physical)
"What's the matter with you, haven't you ever seen a man take a dog for a
ride?" (Dogs, Dogs, Dogs)
"What's the matter with you, didn't you ever see a man take off a dress?"
(The Bank Job)
"What's the matter with you, didn't you ever see a man drinking a cup of
coffee before?" (Barney on the Rebound)

Subject: Opies Mother

I have always wondered about Opie's Mother. She has
been mentioned directly and indirectly in several
episodes, but I have never figured out how: 1. How old
was Opie when she died? 2. Did he remember her? (he
asked Andy once did he and Mom have a special kind of
love?) 3. What was her name? If anyone can shed some
light on these questions I would greatly appreciate
it. Thanks, Anita

What a great story. (It's only too bad it had to happen.)

To all the many Andy Griffith fans, as another such fan, I just want to wish
all of you the best holidays ever. Have a happy Christmas and a wonderful
2001! God bless!

P.S. The Christmas episode with old Ben is one of my favorite Christmas
traditions. I enjoy seeing it over and over. What a message of compassion,
care and concern for others this is. How blessed we are to have these shows
on video where we can experience them over and over 35 or 40 years later!
