Aunt Bee wondered what children saw in today's classrooms. I teach in
rural school and we have a flag in every classroom and the Pledge is led
by a student every morning over the PA. Most patriotic holidays are
made mention of - sometimes not in the depth they should be- but they
are mentioned. As far as inspirational posters, presidential pictures,
etc. . . it depends upon the classroom teacher as to what is displayed
in her/his classroom. If you want to know what is happening - become a
school volunteer if you have the time. Because of today's violence,
they may run a background check on you but our school is always willing
to use an extra hand in cutting things out, copying papers, laminating,
etc. Having someone to volunteer to do that lets the teachers teach and
have extra time to work with the students who need the extra help.

1950 was during the time when some Plymouths and Dodges had a feature
called Fluid Drive. You still had to shift gears, but the clutch was
the kind that is used in automatic transmissions. You could sit
still with the car in gear, but with the clutch out. Automatic
transmissions came into use a couple years later, so Fluid Drive
didn't last very long.

he got his drivers license in 1972 - wish I still had it).

I was watching TAGS last night and I believe the episode name was "The

Bobby Fleets. Does anyone have any idea how many different Bobby Fleets
there actually were? I was just curious.

My 3 favorite in order are:

1- "Dinner at 8" Funny from beginning to ending. The
whole scene where Andy is putting on
                 his sweater. Odd but funny.

2- Howard runs off to the island for a new life. It
was
different and unique. Stands out dramatically.

3- "Look Paw I'm Dancing"- I did an ACTUAL "spit-take"
when I saw Andy dancing the
                           "groovy" way. One of the
best scenes of TAGS ever !

Mary Grace and All,
Mayberrians with a Mayberry philosophy would always be welcomed in Ripon,
my Mayberry. In fact, if all 1725 members and your families moved in, it
would
only be enhanced by your presence!

Those who generally don't feel welcome are those who move here and then
mock the small-town ways and simple pleasures and who try to change the
way the locals think and live to fit a more cosmopolitan viewpoint.

One thing I failed to mention in my response to Miss Holly was that this town
is very unashamedly Christian in it's character and practice. In the same
way
that Andy and Barney sing the old hymns naturally and without pretense,
Christian
ways and virtues fit into my small town. Only those who disdain those things
are made to feel uncomfortable.

We opened this weekend with the play "No Time for Sergeants" at the local
theater group in Georgetown, SC The Swamp Fox Players (843) 527-2924 have
completed three of a scheduled ten performances to sold out audiences each
night. The reviews have been tremendous thus far and we are having a blast!

I am fortunate to be playing the Will Stockdale part. Several other members
of our 'Trivial Trivialities Chapter' are also in the play. It is a dream
come true for me.

I would love for as many Mayberry Fans as possible to be able to see it.
Remaining scheduled shows are: August 2,3,4 at 8:00 P.M. with the August 5
matinee at 2:30 P.M. and August 9,10 and 11 at 8:00 P.M. I have changed
internet servers and awaiting a new address. In the meantime, please forward
this on to Jim Clark for me. He wanted me to let him know when the play was
showing to possibly do something with it in the Bullet or Mayberry Gazette.

Please post this message on the Mayberry page message board for me.
See you guys at Mayberry Days.

Re: Small town life

Carols' assessment of (some) small towns is right on
the money. Sometimes the problems in the big city
pale in comparison to small towns. I can relate to
Carol's noticing that if you're not 5th or 6th
generation, you'll never be accepted. Kind of a
peculiar, almost in-bred attitude. Many (but not all)
small town folks have this attitude. (remember the
episode "Stranger in Town", the good folks of Mayberry
were about to run that fella outta town, and worse).
My favorite lifestyle is to live way out "in the
sticks", but be relatively near a big city for the
conveniences, and sometimes visit small towns, but
never set down roots there. There are good and bad
folks everywhere, including small towns. I've been
helped, and have helped folks in big cities, who I
didn't even know, and have been shunned and robbed in
"quaint", small towns. Most of these small towns have
suffixes like -ville, -burg, or -town in their names.
Just an observation.

As far as color vs. b&w, it has nothing to do with the
episodes being colorized, or Barney leaving. It all
boiled down to the writing, directing, & production.
Several of these key people from the earlier shows
moved on to other projects. This is not a negative
slant, just an observation. The plots and dialogues
were generally watered down after episode 159. That's
not to say they were bad. (actually 159 is rather
weak, but J. Van Dyke helped) Turning the color off on
your set will not change these shows. Floyd was truly
great throughout his tenure on the show, and seemed to
get funnier after his stroke, so there are several
positives to these later episodes. Some of us just
prefer not to watch them, and if we keep the
negativity down (not to break rule #2), there is no
reason that frank, meaningful discussions about the
differences can't continue. Remember how the folks of
Mayberry had classes and meaningful debates about
history. (a colorized episode)

As for the thesis writer, I don't know what your major
is, but showing all 249 episodes in b&w to someone
who's not familiar with the show, and having them
identify when the show "changed" would be a great bit
of analysis for someone. I'll bet most folks would
see the difference after 159, color or not. Always
remember that Mayberry/TAGS was a television show, a
great show, but still just a television show, not a
blueprint for life, or a religious/philosophical
standard setter. The characters were portrayed by
gifted actors, who were member of the Actor's Guild
Union. Life's problems don't get solved in 30 minute
episodes, but the shows do make us laugh, cry, and
yes,.....long for a better place & time, which may
have only existed in our minds.
