As most of us do I put one of my favorite sayings from TAGS at the end of my
message and a couple of people asked me what show it came from. I couldn't
remember but last night it was on and didn't Andy say it (to Barn) - "Ain't
you just cooler than the center seed of a cucumber". It was in the episode in
which the mayor of Greenville asked Barney to be their sheriff.

Speaking of Greenville, one of the things I like about TAGS, and so many
other black and white sitcoms, are the cozy sounding names of the towns, most
ending in 'ville'. Some names here in Connecticut that sound so TAGish are
Stony Creek, Centerbrook, Dayville, Middletown, Rocky Hill and Terryville, all
of which, except for one, are very small towns. Does anyone else have some
cozy TAGish town names?

Ain't you just cooler than the center seed of a cucumber.

Greg, regarding looking at the original year on episodes of our favorite TV
shows and thinking about how old we were at that time and what we were
doing, I do the same thing. It's called nostalgia. And I'm very nostalgic
for the "good old days"!

To the question from Margaret Bentle about Mayberry being a dry county, I
have a possible answer.
Both Andy Griffith and I grew up in Mount Airy, North Carolina in a time
when it was a dry county. However, you could go across the VA line (8 miles
away) or into another "wet" county (no more than 20 miles away) and get
alcohol.

Don't remember the details of that particular episode, but if Barney and
Thelma Lou were dining at home or Andy was making elderberry wine and only
serving it at home, it would be OK. The problem was when it was sold,
especially without paying the federal tax. Andy drew on his memories of
what it was like in his real hometown to set up the some of the
circumstances on the show.

Actually, later in the '40s, the Blue Bird Cafe served beer - that's why us
young'ns were not permitted to go in there (more business for the Snappy
Lunch!!)

For more insights into ANDY GRIFFITH'S real hometown and how it influenced
"The Andy Griffith Show" check out my new book - available from WEAVER'S in
September! If you're coming to "Mayberry Days" I'll be there to autograph
the book.

The actor who played Amzie Strickland's husband, the city councilman in
Greendale, and the man who sold Andy the jars is Dabbs Greer. I believe he
may have been in some more episodes also. By the way, he played the
preacher on "Little House on the Prairie".

And, yes, the lady who sold the mayor the bed jacket is the same actress
who played Emmett's wife in the color episodes.

Someone else asked a question about the significance of Mt. Airy. (I
am surprised that no one has answered that one.) Mt. Airy is Andy
Griffith's hometown, the basis for the fictional town of Mayberry. Note
how the names Mt. Airy and Mayberry sound alike. It is also the basis of
the name of Mayberry's most often mentioned neighbor, Mt. Pilot.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's a photo of Frances Bavier, taken a
couple of decades before Aunt Bee came
to live with Andy and Opie.

Something crossed my mind the other day as I watched the epilogue where Opie
asked his dad and Barney to join the Tomahawks. If everyone in the world
lived by the Tomahawks pledge.......there would be no wars of any kind, no
killing anywhere.

To Greg in Simi Valley...........if the men in the white suits come for you
because you thought back to how old you were and what you were doing when a
particular TAGS program was shown.........I guess you'll have to send them to
pick me up next. Because I do the same as you. Makes me feel apart of the
show.

Hey WBMUTBB Members,

I just wanted to remind you all about the bulletin board set up for WBMUTBB
members only called "The Golden Door to Good Fellowship." The address is
given below.

  http://www.tagsrwc.com/wbmutbb/goldendoor/page1.html

It's a good place to go and talk about Mayberry AND things that we don't
normally talk about here on the WBMUTBB Digest. Members can post pretty much
anything there, so long as it's not off-color or something.

You must put in your email address to post messages (the emails aren't
displayed though). The board checks your email address against the WBMUTBB
member list to see if you're a member. If your email address doesn't
match...you can't post a message.

Anyway, there's been several members posting over there but I wanted to
remind all of you about it.

You can also get to it from the WBMUTBB Chapters "Memebers Only" area.
Remember...the password is: harvey (after our resident TAGS writer Harvey
Bullock)

"Folks", as used on TAGS is a Southern colloquialism. "How's yo' folks?"
is, in the part of the deep South that I grew up in, generally understood to
mean immediate family: Momma, Daddy, any brothers or sisters, as well as
in-laws. However, "How's *all* yo folks?" broadens things up a bit, and
means anybody you're are related to, and those you're not sure of, but think
you might be.

A similar Southern expression, "How's ya Momma an' them?", is an inquiry to
the general well being of the members of your immediate family, as in the
first example above. If everyone is fine the appropriate response is "Momma
an' thems good."

The man who played Mr. Sims and the guy from Greendale who wanted Barney as
Sheriff is Dabbs Geer. He also played the Reverend on "Little House". I think
he also appreared several times on the old "Superman" series.

For those folks in the Chattanooga area, I'm reminded of Dabbs Geer everytime I
see our own Sheriff John Cupp.

And take that gun outta your mouth!

above-mentioned):

Dorothy: Ellie
Scarecrow: Barney
Tin Man: Ange
Cowardly Lion: Gomer
Wizard: Otis
Glenda: Thelma Lou (that red hair!)
Auntie Em: Aunt Bee
Lollipop Munchkin: Leon
Wicked Witch: Clara (don't tell Allan I said that!)
Captain of the Flying Monkeys: Ernest T. Bass (he'd finally get a uniform!)
Toto: the "trembly" dog from "Dogs Dogs Dogs"

<Being born in 1960, I always ponder that date -- like say 1965 - and think
to myself "I was only five years old when this show first aired." What was
I doing then? It's a weird link to my childhood, and one people probably
don't understand, but it connects me to the show in a unique way.>

Hey Greg - I think alot of us understand what you're saying - I know
that I do for sure. Ron Howard is a year younger than me and most times
when I look at him I see a part of myself. From the clothes he wore to
the things he did for entertainment to some of the situations he was
faced with while growing up. It seems strange now that I am several years
older than Andy and Barney were back then but the one person I can still
relate to most is Opie.

Subject: words and music

Hi Everybody-

Now for you analytical types I may be about to tell you way too much about
myself. For many years I have consciously and unconsiously put
lyrics with instrumental music. A couple of examples are: Every time
I hear the theme for World News Tonight I automatically think of the
words along with the music. Think about it - world news tooniiight.
Another one is - entertainment tonight doo doo doo/entertainment tonight doo
doo doo. So, with that said - for many years before I
joined this group I didn't know that the theme to TAGS was called
The Fishin' Hole so I made up my own lyrics. They're not very
poetically correct but they work. BTW - I wrote this when I was about
10 years old. OK here goes:

Andy, Andy Griff, a a Andy Grif-fith
Andy, Andy Griff, the Andy Griffith Show

bom bom bom bom
There's Aunt Bee
bom bom bom bom
And Opee
bom bom bom bom
And Barnee
bomp
And there's old Helen Crump a pump pump pump

Andy, Andy Griff, a a Andy Griffith
Andy, Andy Griff, the Andy Griffith Show / bomp

I played in a duet with another guy for several years and actually
performed this song in a medley with the theme from the Beverly Hillbillies
and the theme from Green Acres. I enjoyed playing the
medley alot more than he did because he had to sing Lisa Douglas's
part.

Allan - I hope you don't mind singing here in the group. I figure
as long as you can't hear us it's OK.

- -Charlie
