You know the tape measure scene in The Cow Thief where Barn is slinging the
tape measure around and the mayor clamps it down before letting it zip back?
Ever notice now natural all that is? I mean, Barn is just aslinging that
tape around and the mayor manages to clamp it at the right time at the right
spot. I wonder if they had to shoot that action several times to get it
right or if they just got lucky the first time?

>how can I find out about Mayberry Days?

The Surry Arts Council hosts Mayberry Days in Mount Airy and information can
be found on their website at www.surryarts.org. There is a link to the Mount
Airy Chamber of Commerce website for available accommodations
(www.visitmayberry.com). Also, Allan has posted many stories from previous
events on WBMUTBB so you can get a feel for what all goes on.

I will also remind everyone about the special Surry Arts Council Valentine's
weekend event in Mount Airy. Howard Morris and Betty Lynn will be performing
"Love Letters" at a dinner theatre on February 9th. I know there will be a
good crowd of WBMUTBB members attending and tickets are still available. The
SAC website has more information - hope to see you there!

Hi! My name is Teresa. I dont post much to the bulletin board. Just love
reading it. One thing I did notice while watching the "County Nurse"
episode last night. When Andy took Mary up to give Rafe his shot, I
noticed that it was the same farm where Frankie Flint and her Paw lived.
Even looked like the same chickens in the yard. I wonder if ol' Rafe
bought the farm (chickens and all) from Flint?

Just curious!!!

When Andy helps Barn say the preamble to the Constitution is flat out
hilarious. "In order to form a more perfect YOU !" "Nyun !" "UNION !"
Of course the giraffes speech is an all time classic, too. And what
about when Barn takes the jail time rather than pay a fine. He stands there
with that bug-eyed look of his, and says "Who looks foolish now sherriff ?"
In "Opie the birdman" I always crack up at Barney's interpretations of
the various birdcalls, and when Andy says "Winken will tell Blinken, Blinken
will tell Nod, Nod will tell Barney, and Barney will tell you !"
Chick-a-chee, chick-a-chee (like a squirrell) !!

Many of the episodes/scenes listed previously are favorites of mine, but my
new favorite is a scene between Andy and Opie when the latter receives
advice from the spoiled brat. Opie enters into a negotiation session with
Andy about how kids nowadays receive an allowance -- 75 cents -- but they
don't hafta work for it. Andy explains to him the value of earning a
quarter for cleaning out the garage, and then asks Opie whether he feels
good after cleaning the garage. Opie's response: yea, good and tired. They
continue in the dialogue and it really is classic.

Bullock's comments. If anyone still has a copy, could you please

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

And as to favorite episodes and scenes, mine are any of the episodes
that have Andy and Barney sitting on the porch or in front of the
courthouse and musing over what their plans are. They usually start
with Barney saying:
"Know what I think I'm going to do? . . ." and they go on from
there, back and forth. They do this with variations in several
episodes; the ones that come immediately to mind are "Man in a Hurry"
(which at my house we call "Mr. Tucker sits a spell") and the "Lady
Convict" (I'm not sure if that's the title). Those wonderful
exchanges have always seemed to me to be the quintessence of
Mayberry: the gentle humor and respect of the characters--plus they
remind me of sitting on my grandparents's porch in rural West
Tennessee when I was a child; we'd shell peas or shuck corn and the
adult conversation would drift as lazily and languidly as the humid
summer breeze. Good memories--Marsha in Michigan

Mr Tucker: "You people are living in another world! . . . here, a whole
town is standing still because two old women's feet fall asleep!"
Barney: "I wonder what causes that?"

Other than Andy, Barney and Floyd; I reckon I have to
say that any of the scenes with The Darlings' and
Ernest T. Bass have to be among my most favorites.
Although like everyone else, it is so hard to decide.
When Ernest T. runs off with Barney in Charlene's
wedding dress and veil, lifts it up and see's Barney's
face and not Charlene's, I lose it. When Briscoe
comes to town to get help with Ernest T. in the same
episode and he's leaving the courthouse...Barney says:
"Adios Amigo"....Briscoe looks at Andy and asks: "is
he one of ourn" I LOL! Of course all the episodes
where Andy and Opie have tender moments....I love you
just because your my son. In the Mr. McBeevee
episode..." you believe me don't you, don't you
Pa?......I just about cry every time. When Barney
goes into one of his big explanations about subjects
he's not really familiar with are great too, and who
could forget when he recites "perfectly from memory"
the preamble to the Constitution! I love also how
Floyd meanders off into his own thoughts, while
someone is trying to tell him something. When Miss
Madelyn Grayson comes to Mayberry ,he is at his best
yelling at himself in the "looking glass"!

All this talk of favorite scenes brings to mind one I saw again
recently. In "Goober Goes to the Auto Show," Andy spots Roy working in
the gas station and hints that Goober might want to say hi; Goober says
he wouldn't want to embarrass him and Ange gets that PTL look and tells
him he's made it! Even though it makes me cry I greatly look forward to

Like everyone else that has responded to this question, I have several
favorites. One of the first ones that comes to mind is the story about Andy
stringing up the carp, from the episode where Andy & Barney win an award from
the "FBI". I also like the "Horatio" story. Another one that I get a kick
out of every time is when Otis gets his driver's license and Barney tests him
with the Matchbox cars. My favorite line out of that scene is "Beep beep.
Out of my way Sunday driver." Of course there are many more, but these
popped in mind first.

In my opinion, Rick and Bubba are much funnier than John Boy and Billy and
they are big TAGS fans. Although they are still rather new in the syndication
game and are mainly on stations in the southeast. If traveling through, give
'em a listen. Also, you can pick up their best of CDs just about anywhere in
the country. As Andy would say, "They're good, real good" and you can even
let the youngun's listen.

After reading all of the comments about peoples favorite lines from TAGS it
got me to thinking about mine and the fact that I cant remember what episode
it came from. It goes something like this:

Mayor Stoner: Sheriff Taylor that is the most hairbrained idea I have ever
heard.
The mayor then exits with Barney and I think someone from the state police.
Next Barney returns to stay with Andy:
Andy: I thought you left
Barney: Well I got to thinkin of another time when a different mayor thought
you had a hairbrained idea
Andy: ohh
Barney: Yeah when you decided to make me your deputy.
Chokes me up every time!!! I know these are not the exact lines but they are
the best I can do from memory. I thought these lines were from the Cow
Thief episode (shoes on a cow?). But the past couple of times I have seen
the episode on TV Land I dont recall hearing that line. I know one of you
Mayberry experts out there will know the answer. Thanks for your help!!

Subject: Switchblade Sisters
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

About a week ago, someone mentioned seeing an obscure 1974 movie called
"Switchblade Sisters" that was shot, in part, on the 40 Acres back lot (the
same lot where TAGS was filmed). Naturally, I had to see the movie, so I
checked the local video store, and they had it. Believe it or not, it's now
available on DVD! Apparently, this film has a cult following. Anyway, here
is a brief review:

The movie itself is not too bad, but it is very "un-Mayberry" like. It has
a lot of violence and vulgar language, and some brief nudity. The basic
plot is about juvenile deliquency and rival teenage gangs (mostly girl
gangs). The downtown Mayberry set is seen near the end of the film, when
the "big showdown" happens. There's a scene where a makeshift tank (an old
car with metal plates attached to it) turns the corner and stops right in
front of the Mayberry courthouse. A little later, a gang member tries to
hide at the bottom of the stairwell at the back of the courthouse. (On
TAGS, we see Otis walk up these same stairs while Andy and Barney are
looking for "The Loaded Goat." Was someone selling liquor in the courthouse
basement? But I digress.) A few other Mayberry landmarks are visible too,
such as the Palmerton Cafe where Jerry Miller (Jerry Van Dyke) helped the
school kids cross the street.

In a way, it's sad (but quite fascinating) to see "Mayberry" looking like a
slum in this movie. Everything was dirty, the streets were littered with
trash, and many of the buildings were covered with graffiti. I don't know
exactly when the 40 Acres back lot was demolished, but this film may have
been the last thing shot there. The video is worth checking out, but like I
said this movie is definitely NOT for the entire family. If you rent it
just to see "Mayberry," you can skip through the first 90 minutes or so and
just watch the ending.

This may seem silly, but I'm serious: Debbie, (or anyone in the Siler City
area) if you get the chance to talk with those nice folks again, could you
please try to find out if any of Frances' cats are still alive? I've been
wondering that for some time now. She had lots and lots of pet cats, and I
read that when she died (December 6, 1989), everybody in Siler City wanted
to adopt one of "Aunt Bee's cats." The cats would have to be at least 13
years old now, but it's possible that some of them may have survived this
long.

Some of my favorite scenes that I wait to see when the episode comes on is:

In the episode where Andy delivers the baby, when Sam comes out on the porch
and says that he can't get "Andy" to stop crying. The look on Andy's face
is priceless.

In the Christmas episode, seeing Ol' Ben singing in the window of the
courthouse gets me everytime. Also in the episode when Ben starts getting
the presents out of his bag and pretends that he meant to get other things.

In the episode where the stranger comes to town and Andy asks him if he
thinks men will walk on the moon someday, and Mr Sawyer says he's going the
himself someday, and then Andy tells him he's already there. Also in that
episode when Andy stands up to the town, and tells them he is great mind to
leave with Mr. Sawyer, also when the girl comes to the courthouse and Mr
Sawyer can't control himself, and Andy asks him "What's wrong with you boy
you shy or something."

Well, I could go on and on, but I think I will stop there. I have a
favorite scene from each episode but these are some of my top ones.

Best of luck to you and yours,
April Hayes
