I noticed who I believed to be Mr. Schwamp in Christmas in Connecticut a few
years ago and may have been one to post a comment on it in the Digest. I stand
by my opinion that it is indeed the original (one & only) Mr. Schwamp at the
dance in Connecticut. I am aware of the difference of 20 years, plus or minus,
between the movie and TAGS, but it's my observation that Mr. Schwamp is
probably early 60's during his TAGS appearances. That would put him in the
40ish range fro Christmas in Connecticut. Some folks don't change much in
appearance from 35-60 or so, and Mr. Schwamp may be one. If in fact he always
wore a wig, that could also explain some similarities in appearance over a 20
year span.

Since no one can determine his real name with any certainty, I'm guessing
we'll never have a definitive answer to this question either, but it's fun to
imagine Mr. Schwamp in roles outside of Mayberry. Imagine if he would have
appeared in other shows (cue fog & wavy picture):

  1. A fourth writer for the "Alan Brady Show" on Dick Van Dyke (can you
imagine the jokes Buddy would crack about his hair?)
  2. Mr. Drysdale's butler/driver/gardner/etc. and neighbor to the Clampetts
on the Beverly Hillbillies (I'd like to see he and Granny tangle!)
  3. A visiting German general on Hogan's Heroes (imagine him giving Col.
Klink whatfor!)
  4. Base commander at Camp Henderson on Gomer Pyle, USMC (he would probably
have a soft spot for Gomer just like Col. Gray).
  5. Neighboring farmer on Green Acres (maybe with a talking horse!)
  6. One of Dr. Hartley's patients on the Bob Newhart Show (he and Mrs.
Bakerman would have made a cute pair).
  7. One of Mary Richards' love interests on the Mary Tyler Moore Show (OK,
that is a bit farfetched)
  8. Finally--one for the movies--what if Mr. Schwamp was cast as Butch
Cassidy rather than Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid? ("You
just keep thinkin', Butch").

Happy New Year's to Mr. Schwamp and all the other Mayberry friends.
